Last week, at Deerfield High School, we happily screened our 60,000th student (say that ten times fast). With as much fanfare as we could manage while we were knee deep in stickies, EKGs and echoes, we surprised the good humored and unsuspecting Jacob Braunstein as he entered the gym.  With cameras flashing, we presented Jacob with a certificate honoring him as our 60,000th EKG, as well as $20 in gift certificates to Gino’s East Pizza. Jacob had no idea what hit him but we couldn’t have asked for a better sport to receive this honor. Jacob allowed us to fuss over him and photograph him like we were paparazzi. Jacob plays varsity soccer and is captain for the DHS lacrosse team which allowed him to participate in a study in which we provide echocardiograms  to varsity basketball and soccer athletes. Waiting alongside his varsity athlete friends, including his twin brother, extended Jacob’s fifteen minutes of fame. His buddies made sure, they, too, were photographed with our star. It was truly fun to watch. I’m not sure Jacob was ready to give up the spotlight when it was time to return to class, but he certainly left an impression on us.

Won’t you help us get to our 70,000th student? With your help, we continue to provide EKG screenings to area schools looking for at-risk kids and having a little fun along the way. As you enjoy your Thanksgiving with your family, think about those who have an open space at their table and in their hearts due to a hidden heart condition. On #GivingTuesday and beyond please consider us when planning your charitable contributions. Thank you for screening your teens.
